Mid-Winter Steel
Well, it looks like ice fishing is going to be a bust this year. at least we got out one time. Gunny and i got out on the river this last saturday and had a pretty good day doing some float fishing. my 3 drift of the day produced my biggest steelie in a couple [...]

It was the brutal winter of 1984 when Uncle Rando set out on the frozen tundra of Great Slave Lake (Grand lac des Esclaves) in the Northwest Territories of Canada.  The local towns people figured Rando was absolutely insane for braving the frigid north winds of the  unforgiving north country.  No longer than 2hrs after heading out of the town and onto the ice, Rando was back with a potato sack full of walleye and perch.  The towns folk were awestruck, they had never seen a catch like that come out of their waters for 20+ years and never in the winter.

After cleaning up his catch, Rando pulled up a bar stool at the nearby saloon as the locals began prodding him for any tips or techniques that could explain his amazing catch.  After countless shots of the bottom shelf whiskey Rando reluctantly began to share some of his knowledge and wisdom.  The locals were amazed by his vast abilities to persuade fish into committing to his presentations.  After taking notes on Randos’ tips, one of the locals says, “he’s like.....an Ice Bandit”.  Ever since that day the title “Ice Bandit” stuck to Rando wherever he went, and he wore it proudly until his dying day.

Since that fateful day, Uncle Rando, his close friends and some immediate family have been initiated into his elite company and earned their title/status as an Ice Bandit.  Over the years the team has steadily grown to an astounding 18 members.

As years pass the stories become more questionable and the drinks colder but one thing remains...once a bandit...always a bandit!

So the tradition starts here......stay tuned to see where it’s headed.
